AN INTRODUCTION
Red Velvet, or 레드벨벳, is a Korean girl group from SM Entertainment. They debuted on August 1, 2014, as a four-piece consisting of: Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, and Joy. In March the next year, Yeri joined the group and completed the line-up.
The group’s concept consists of two sides: bright, bold, and bubbly experimental pop make up their “Red” half, while the “Velvet” is a much more lush and soft soundscape that contains elements of R&B, ballads, and jazz. But there’s more to Red Velvet than just their duality. Since 2016, the group has often brought elements of both sides together, expanding their color palette and showcasing an unmatched versatility.
Praised for their top-tier slate of B-sides, Red Velvet’s critically acclaimed discography has an amazing variety and experimental edge. They are always trying new and unique things; do not expect them to repeat sounds or concepts. As Dazed Magazine has noted, Red Velvet are the most musically interesting girl group in K-Pop and according to Billboard, the best idol group alive.
